- Rs. 177500 ) + Inflation compensation (50%) + Out Of Campus Allowance (OCA) (if applicable) p.m. Institute: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay About the Project: This Government-funded project focuses on developing advanced drone and allied technologies, including selected drone applications. This job pertains to a sub-project that focuses on Coastal Relief Modelling. We are seeking a highly motivated Project Research Engineer to join a cutting-edge research initiative focused on coastal zone mapping. The candidate will lead the upgradation of in-house algorithms to estimate nearshore depth (bathymetry) using UAV-based imagery and satellite remote sensing. This role bridges the gap between field-based data collection and high-level computational modelling. The work involves preparing regular technical reports, publishing research in peer-reviewed journals, and performing administrative work related to the project. Qualification & Experience: MTech / ME / or equivalent degree OR BTech /BE /M.Sc/MCA or equivalent degree with 2 years of relevant experience Note: Geoinformatics/Remote Sensing/Geomatics or Coastal/Ocean Engineering or Computer Science Engineering with Geospatial Technology minor/honors are the eligible specializations. Experience in remote sensing-based coastal studies and near-shore bathymetry estimations is desirable Key Skills Required:
- Proven experience in Python/MATLAB for geospatial image processing
- Hands-on experience with UAV data acquisition and photogrammetric reconstruction.
- Working knowledge of cloud-based computing through platforms such as Google Earth Engine
- Good communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to coordinate with drone design and engineering technical teams and other internal departments.
- Willingness to travel and work in outdoor coastal environments.
- Proficiency in MS OƯice (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of hydrographic surveying principles is desirable
- Prior experience in publishing research in Scopus-indexed journals is a significant plus To excel in this role, a candidate should ideally possess a mix of the following:
- Geospatial & Remote Sensing: Proficiency in Satellite Derived Bathymetry (SDB), LiDAR data processing, and multispectral image analysis.
- UAV Operations: Experience with drone mission planning (e.g., DJI Terra, UgCS) and photogrammetry software (Agisoft Metashape, Pix4D).
- Computational Skills: Robust programming in Python or MATLAB for algorithm development, and familiarity with GIS tools (ArcGIS, QGIS, or ENVI).
- Hydrodynamics/Coastal Engineering: Understanding of wave theory, coastal morphology, and tidal corrections.
- Field Competency: Ability to handle GNSS/RTK equipment and conduct UAV surveys in challenging beach/surf zone environments. Roles & Responsibilities:
- 3-4 times UAV surveys of the selected coastal sites, such as Pondicherry, and one on the West Coast
- Development of Wave tracking-based algorithm, customization, etc
- Estimation of near-shore bathymetry from UAV videos and validation using ground-based echo-sounder data
- Estimation of near-shore bed elevations through Satellite Remote Sensing data from optical, SAR, and LiDAR
- Generation of Coastal Relief Models
- Track ongoing work, timelines, and report progress
- Take ownership of assigned tasks, handling activities from planning to completion with accountability
