There are two main categories: biotic systems that use bacteria to form calcium carbonate, and abiotic systems that rely on chemical agents. Key methods include autogenous healing through continued cement hydration, capsule-based systems that release resins when cracks form, vascular networks that supply healing agents, and shape memory alloys that assist in crack closure.

Benefits include improved crack sealing and lower maintenance needs. However, higher initial cost, limited field familiarity, and lack of standard codes remain practical challenges.
