- Palliative Care Medical Social Worker: Project Context: This role of Palliative Care Medical Social Worker is part of Defeat-NCD India Foundations Palliative Care Programme. A 3-year initiative with Goa Medical College (GMC) is foreseen to establish OPD, IPD, day-care, and home-based palliative care services. Key objectives include:
- Improving quality of life for patients with life-threatening illnesses.
- Reducing hospital readmissions through community-based care.
- Strengthening training for healthcare professionals and caregivers. The project also focuses on raising awareness and enhancing palliative care capacity in primary and secondary healthcare settings and promoting policy-level advocacy to integrate palliative care into Goa’s health system. Role Details: Position Title:Palliative Care Medical Social Worker Work Location: Goa Total Positions: 1 Reporting Manager: Palliative care Medical Officer and in close coordination with GMC Head of Oncology Department Contract:One-year EOR contract, renewable annually based on performance, within the project duration Renumeration (CTC basis): Around Rs 30000 (will be determined based on qualifications and experience) Stakeholders: Relationship (within the organization): Multi-disciplinary team members in the program (DNCD and GMC) Relationship (Outside Organization) :Primary Care professionals Hospital colleagues, Community-based organizations Job Description 1
- Identify responsible health-related suffering and related psycho-social needs, triage to address them
- Address critical psycho-social support to palliative care patients in their homes/ OPC through the palliative care team- including bereavement support
- Maintain and link up needy patients and families with the health facility as per the need’s assessment
- Activate rehabilitation activities – physical, economic self-sufficiency
- Identify missing gaps of care in individual patients/families and ensure coordination
- Work as part of a multi-disciplinary palliative care team in ensuring excellent patient care services and carrying out quality improvement initiatives
- To help patients in identification with the necessary government schemes for patient assistance program
- Works closely with palliative care teams, including Doctors, Nurses, and therapist, to ensure a holistic approach to care
- Contribute to developing and improving palliative care services within the organization.
- Lead and participate in community outreach and awareness initiatives 2
- Interact with patients during 1st visit and subsequently, to record and provide psychosocial support
- Maintenance of clear records about psychosocial issues
- Covey concerns and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to improve the quality of care
- Assess eligibility of patient/ family member for rehabilitation services and coordinate for the same
- Share info on support/jobs/pensions/government schemes/fund utilisation of empanelled institutions / religious community funds / vocational training/ hand-cart / formal education
- Adhere to the practice of confidentiality regarding patients, families, staff, and the organization.
- Provide bereavement support to family
- Perform other duties as requested 3
- Attend fortnightly coordination meetings at headquarters
- Maintain and update knowledge and skills through continuing education – in-house or outstation
- Assist in in-house training sessions, conduct caregiver training and support groups to empower families in managing care at home. 4
- Participate in events held by can support for bereaved families (Remembrance Day)
- Cancer awareness, preventive oncology, participate in events held as part of continuity of care 5
- Perform other duties as required and assigned by management Job Requirements Qualifications:
- Medical Social work – with clinical experience
- Psycho-oncology
- Graduation in Clinical Psychology – with clinical experience Desirable:
- Computer Skills- MS Office (Word, PowerPoint and Excel) Experience:
- 3-7 years’ experience as a counsellor/social worker/ psychologist in NGOs/schools/hospitals Skills/Competencies:
- Knowledge about the subject
- Work with the team to ensure empathetic care to patients and family members
- Problem solver, Work with diverse stakeholders
- Active listener, problem solver with excellent written and verbal communication Note: The candidate should be eligible to work in India.
