Senior Process Engineer (Malur)

The Senior Process Engineer is responsible for developing, scaling, and optimizing chemical synthesis processes used in coating raw materials such as resins, binders, additives, and intermediates. This role combines reaction engineering, polymer/chemical synthesis, and unit operations to ensure high-quality, cost-effective, and safe production. Key Responsibilities Chemical Synthesis & Process Development -Develop and scale-up synthesis of coating raw materials including: -Alkyd resins -Acrylics and emulsions -Epoxy resins -Polyurethanes -Specialty additives -Optimize reaction conditions (temperature, catalysts, solvents, pH, time) -Evaluate polymerization and reaction kinetics Unit Operations & Process Integration -Design and optimize associated unit operations: -Reactors (batch, semi-batch) -Distillation & solvent recovery -Filtration and drying -Mixing and blending systems -Ensure smooth integration between synthesis and downstream processing Process Optimization & Cost Reduction -Improve yield, viscosity control, and product consistency -Reduce cycle time, energy usage, and raw material consumption -Minimize off-spec batches and rework -Use process simulation and data analysis tools Plant Support & Troubleshooting -Provide technical support for production of coating materials -Troubleshoot issues such as: -Inconsistent polymer properties (MW, viscosity) -Gel formation or incomplete reactions -Fouling or heat transfer limitations -Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective actions Safety & Compliance -Conduct hazard analysis for exothermic reactions and polymerization processes -Ensure safe handling of solvents, monomers, and flammable materials -Lead HAZOP / risk assessments -Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations Quality & Product Performance -Work closely with R&D; and QA/QC to meet coating performance specs: -Adhesion -Drying time -Gloss and durability -Support formulation improvements and customer requirements Technology Transfer & Scale-Up
- Transfer processes from lab to pilot and commercial scale -Develop SOPs, batch sheets, and process documentation -Support commissioning and plant trials Leadership & Collaboration -Mentor junior engineers and operators -Collaborate with R&D;, production, procurement, and EHS teams -Interface with suppliers and customers for technical support Required Skills Technical Expertise Strong knowledge of: -Polymer chemistry & resin synthesis -Reaction engineering and heat/mass transfer -Coating raw materials and formulation basics -Experience with: Batch and semi-batch reactors, Solvent handling and recovery systems -Familiarity with tools like Aspen Plus / HYSYS is a plus Industry Knowledge -Coatings, paints, adhesives, or specialty chemicals -Understanding of VOC regulations and environmental standards Soft Skills -Solid troubleshooting and analytical thinking
- Leadership and mentoring ability -Effective cross-functional communication -Project management skills Qualifications -Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering / Polymer Engineering -5+ years of experience in coatings, resins, or specialty chemicals manufacturing Work Environment -Paints and coatings manufacturing plants
